Realized GARCH: A Joint Model for Returns and Realized Measures of Volatility∗

چکیده
We introduce a new framework, Realized GARCH, for the joint modeling of returns and realized measures of volatility. A key feature is a measurement equation that relates the realized measure to the conditional variance of returns. The measurement equation facilitates a simple modeling of the dependence between returns and future volatility. Realized GARCH models with a linear or log-linear speci cation have many attractive features. They are parsimonious, simple to estimate, and imply an ARMA structure for the conditional variance and the realized measure. An empirical application with DJIA stocks and an exchange traded index fund shows that a simple Realized GARCH structure leads to substantial improvements in the empirical t over standard GARCH models that only use daily returns.

Modeling Gold Volatility: Realized GARCH Approach
F orecasting the volatility of a financial asset has wide implications in finance. Conditional variance extracted from the GARCH framework could be a suitable proxy of financial asset volatility. Option pricing, portfolio optimization, and risk management are examples of implications of conditional variance forecasting. One of the most recent methods of volatility forecasting is Real...

We introduce the Realized Exponential GARCH model that can utilize multiple realized volatility measures for the modeling of a return series. The model specifies the dynamic properties of both returns and realized measures, and is characterized by a flexible modeling of the dependence between returns and volatility. We apply the model to DJIA stocks and an exchange traded fund that tracks the S...
متن کاملForecasting the Return Distribution Using High-Frequency Volatility Measures
The aim of this paper is to forecast (out-of-sample) the distribution of financial returns based on realized volatility measures constructed from high-frequency returns. We adopt a semi-parametric model for the distribution by assuming that the return quantiles depend on the realized measures and evaluate the distribution, quantile and interval forecasts of the quantile model in comparison to a...
متن کاملRealized Volatility in Noisy Prices: a MSRV approach
Volatility is the primary measure of risk in modern finance and volatility estimation and inference has attracted substantial attention in the recent financial econometric literature, especially in high-frequency analyses. High-frequency prices carry a significant amount of noise. Therefore, there are two volatility components embedded in the returns constructed using high frequency prices: the...
متن کاملRealized Volatility and Modeling Stock Returns as a Mixture of Normal Random Variables: the GARCH-Skew-t Model
This paper provides a new empirical guidance for modeling a skewed and fat-tailed error distribution underlying the traditional GARCH models for equity returns based on empirical findings on Realized Volatility (RV), constructed from the summation of higher-frequency squared (demeaned) returns. Based on an 80-year sample of U.S. daily stock market returns, I find that the distribution of monthl...
